I like the play dead when they roll onto their backs and spread out and really look like a dead dog, it is very funny this way.
How I did it was to first teach lay and then roll over. Once those are understood it is easier. I would tell them to lay, then roll over then I'd roll them back on their backs with my hands and hold them their and repeat "play dead" or whatever you are going to say.
Then the next time we didn't do lay first or roll over just worked on play dead. Both of my dogs learned it pretty quickly with this method. Oh and of course they get a treat upon successful completion of every trick at the exact moment it is executed.
You have to say the exact same thing each time so decide what you like and stick with it. Some people say bang bang and the dog drops down and over it's really fun this way too.
Some dogs love to learn tricks and some aren't so into it. So your success in the amount of time that it takes depends upon the breed.

Never correct your dog when trying to train them new tricks. Corrections are for when your dog is doing an unwanted action. Start small, like teaching your dog to lay on command and then maybe a stay command. Always reward when the dog does good. If you are becoming inpatient with, stop and take a break. Reward the dog with treats and lots of praise.
Once you teach him to lay, then stay, teach him to roll over. Then work on a single command for him to do all three at once. As he learns the verbal command for playing dead, you start adding hand motions for it. Like pointing at him and shooting. Dogs are very smart and can learn upwards of 1500 commands. It takes patients and reward. Again never correct when teaching a new trick, only praise.

If your dog can sit and stay then you should be able to teach it to play dead. While he was laying down I pointed my finger at my dog like a gun and said 'bang' then I rolled him over on to his side and told him to stay. Every time he did it right he got rewarded. It took a few times for him to catch on but he did and can now play dead on command. Keep working with the dog. Repetition is the key.

first teach your dog to lay down. once he lays down almost every time, start teaching him to lay down with the "gun" cue. Once he can do that every time, teach him to do it with the voice command.
