The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first time a species achieves sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods. Only 10% of us have made the leap to the next level of evolution and we are the only ones who should be called fully Human. Religionists should be classified more correctly as Proto-Human.

When G-d created Adam and Even in the garden, He gave them essentially the opportunity to worship Him by being obedient to His word, which essentially amounts to worship. Religion is about relating to G-d, either by ways which G-d proscribes or which man does. In Cain, he decided to worship G-d his way and Abel knew instinctively what was right (sacrifice) and his offering was pleasing to G-d. We find subsequently that Noah worshiped G-d in building an Ark and Abraham followed after G-d and went were G-d told him to go. Each of the above relied upon an individual relationship with their Creator, as did Moses and Elijah et al through the ages. An individual relationship with G-d, by virtue of Christ's sacrifice upon the Cross will avail you and others much, as you walk with Him as others have in the past. There is a scripture verse which suggests that He is a very present help in time of trouble. This is something which I've found for the 38+ years in which I've followed Him and know that it can be as real for you as well.
