To start up a new religion, for it to be recognised as a religion rather than a load of "vague thoughts and opinions of a mad and insane individual" what does it need? a certain amount of believers? a certificate? do you need a degree?! What you do you think would make a new religion successful in this day and age?

for anyone who is offended by this question, I would just like to say that I posted it because it was just somehting I was wondering about because:
1) I find it a humourous topic in light of scientology (sorry for laughing at another religion)
2) Even though I have a very religious upbringing, I still believe what I believe and it's not really what my religion agrees on. But I think it's important to have some faith in something, whatever it may be.... trees, stones, one god, millions of gods etc... so instead of believing what I believe and being ashamed of it why not share it with others who might believe the same thing...
(and make money out of it at the same time!! not intentionally of course!)

Hubbard did it, so can you! Check out the history of Scientology. Another one is Wicca which was created from a fictional book written in the early 1900s.

You could begin with a new line of cosmetics and a philosophy based on the books by Dale Carnegie or the Free Masons. Paints can be applied to the skin ritually, with soft drumming in the background.
The cosmetics should at least make some claim to tighten the skin and promote an appearance of enlightenment. It should be proposed that the initiate buy a sample kit, work from home and spread the word, sending larger amounts of cash to the organization with each passing month. The believer benefits by being part of something bigger than him/herself and never has to stress out deciding on Christmas presents for friends and family.

I have created my own religion, loosely based on a Zen Buddhist/"Do the right thing" approach to life. I think that if you want to practice it, just practice it, man. Is this something you are trying to validate through a church, because most churches and religious entities frown upon that...they think nothing is wrong with the religion that they already have.
Isn't most religion "vague thoughts and opinions of a mad and insane individual" anyhow?
Good Luck,
Much Love

Check out scientology for a great example of a start-up religion that is doing just fine! And, Tom Cruise aside, they are not a bunch of nuts or "mad and insane individuals". They actually have science-sounding words to back up their beliefs, which is a major step in the right direction.

I already did, and we have an imaginary God with imaginary angels and the whole setup. It's really inspiring too.
Certificate? Yes we made up imaginary certificates, and printing up a lot of material. It's all so exciting. I had no idea relgion could be so meaningful and beneficial.
We even have slogans and principles and everything, with our own website, I am so pleased I am beside myself. Now I know why people believe in God. It's really really special.

well back in the BC times, and even util like the 1800's, it wasn't too hard to start a religion because u didn't have computers phones, and so forth. so basically a lot of people didn't even know of religion, or could fall for one easily since they really wouldn't be able to find out more about it to discredit it. so for example.. joseph smith. he created his own fake religion (imo.) and so many people fell for it because they had no way to disprove it.
now days though, if someone says they're a prophet, you never believe them lol!
so now days for someone to start a religion and be a prophet they need to show miracles or something of the like.
it would be easy to start a religion in areas that lack literature and education. but not here in the U.S.

ya gotta get ya some golden plates and then go out in the woods and eat some acid. pretty soon, some dude will come by and say he is the angel moroni and tell you that you are now conversing with god and now you have a new religion. You might have to move out into the desert and start a new town, but then hey, nothing is free is it???

No human can start up a new religion. Throughout history Satan disguised as the Angel of light who has the knowledge and cunning to use some highly proud individuals as prophets to introduce new false religions. It is accomplished by giving them visions. The more illiterate the prophet, the more people will believe them as miraculous.
