This happens to a lot of pets when a new pet is introduced into your home. Keep the cats separated for a little while (for example have them gated in different rooms) so they can get used to each other without being able to hurt each other. Allow them to get used to eacch other slowly, and your old cat should warm up to him.
Make sure that youre giving your old cat the same attention that hes used to or this could cause even more of a problem (your old cat will 'blame' your new one for the lacck of attention).
If you see your cat start to go after the kitten, a water bottle can be used to spray him so that he wont attack.
Is it a male cat? Male cats tend to be more aggressive Especially if your new cat is female and the old one is male there will be a very good chance of him beating up the younger cat.
Unfortunately, theres not much that can really be done aside from what ive already said. Keep them separated to let them get used to each other, and spray your old cat with water if he starts beating on the younger cat.
This problem may subside when your new cat gets used to his new surroundings, feels more comfortable and able to defend himself. Your old cat will most likely leave him alone if he feels like the new cat is going to put up a fight.
If this really does persist, then you may need to seriously consider giving up your new kitty. I know it sounds awful, but I had this same problem with an old cat of mine. We got a new kitten and they never took to each other, my older cat would beat up the kitten to the point that he would be limping around the house. It can happen with extremely territorial cats, and theres not much getting around it. I urge you to return your new cat if this persists for an extended period of time for the sake of the cat, it will not be a good environment for him to live in if he has to constantly live in fear. Of course this is a last resort, and only after you have tried all other methods, and after time they do not work.
Hope this helps.

Did you keep the 2nd cat confined for any time? Or did you just let them both together immediately? I got a 2nd cat and my first cat had a hard time accepting him even after he was kept in a separate room for almost two weeks. They are both neutered. I started feeding them on opposite sides of a closed door so they could get used to the smell of the other cat while they were doing something pleasurable which was eating. Also I gave them cat treats while they were in the same room and not fighting. It took awhile but the first cat will now tolerate the 2nd cat even if they are not the best of friends. I would recommend neutering the new cat.

Hey, it sounds as though your 7 month old is having some problems letting another cat into its ''territory''! Keep them seperated for a while, then slowly introduce them to each other again. If and when the older cat goes for the 6 month old, spray it with water. It works a bloody treat. Use of the word ''NO'' goes down well too.
Update me on what happens! :)

Cats are very territorial. You may have to keep 'em separated for a while and occasionally introduce them until they get used to each other. Then everything will be comin' up roses. Sorry that last part was kinda gay.

I wish I knew the answer to that for sure.
Separate them for a time if you're able to. Put them in two separate rooms, with each one having their own food and litter.
That seems to be the best answer for now because they don't know each other right now.
Keep them busy ; try not to let them get bored if you can.

They are just young and eventually they will get over it and know that they are stuck with each other. They will either get along or ignore each other. Sense they are so young you have hope but if they were older i wouldn't have much hope cause they are more stuborn.

Let them fight it out. If you don't want to do that, seperate them.
