My sisters dog has heartworm and is being treated for it by the vet, his last shots to kill the heartworms were about 3 weeks ago and he has been doing great. Yesterday he started coughing again and we called the vet and he told us to give him cough medicine. Will his cough go away ?

I did ask the vet and he said if it does not go away he will prescribe something stronger. Has anyone had this problem ?

Most likely yes. This is a common issue for these guys, I work in rescue and have had many dogs go through this procedure. Follow your vet's advice. If it gets worse or is very serious it may need a brief course of steroids like prednisone (yes prednisone and steroids have side effects but your vet will prescribe a short course with a tapering dosage that is safe for your dog.). In cases of severe heartworm disease there may be some scarring left in the lungs or heart after treatment is finished which can cause a periodic cough (your vet can check this out on his next visit). But this often needs no or little treatment over the long term.
My pitbull Brujah who I rescued, had a horribly severe case of heartworms. During and just after the treatment he coughed quite a bit and needed medication and rest to get over it. Now he has a periodic cough (especially when he over does it) but it almost never needs any kind of treatment.

Goodluck to the doggy!! I hope he does great!

The vet should do another heartworm test to see if things are progressing correctly and make sure the microfilia are all gone. The dog may need more treatment for heartworms.

Was he coughing before he was treated? This may be something different and not heartworms. Why would his treatment not kill the worms? I have got more questions than answers. He should be examined closely to make sure the worms are completely destroyed.

Coughing does not always mean that your dog has heartworms. You need to have bloodwork to detect heartworms. A dog can have heartworms and seem perfectly healthy.

probably, yet i could provide the vet a hoop and notice if that's poisonous and what may well be achieved to counteract the medicine. frequently, a double dose of drugs won't harm an animal however the Yorkie is so small which you will desire to locate out the area consequences and made conscious of any threat indicators. there are various tactics this would have handed off including the better canines not swallowing the heartworm drugs. We continuously attempt to stay away from issues even inspite of the shown fact that injuries can ensue. sturdy luck!
