It could be a few things. maybe she has to go potty, maybe its time to be fixed, maybe she has a urinary infection and her privates itch, or and this is really gross there a problem down there. my grandmas poodle did that alot and they took him to the vet, he was doing it cuz he had a blister on the inside of his butthole, nasty I know, but its a possibility. or your dog just might need a bath or flea treatment. Give her a couple days and if shes still doing it Monday call a vet to get her checked out.

Why does my dog drag her rear end on the carpet?

There are many reasons a dog may drag her rear end along the ground. If there is an irritation around the anal opening either due to an allergy or infection the dog may be trying to scratch the area. In other situations the dog is attempting to express two small glands on either side of the anal opening called anal glands. These usually discharge when the dog defecates but can become blocked and irritating to the dog. Some dogs will attempt to empty them by "scooting" their rear end along the ground. In either situation a veterinary visit is usually needed to treat the source of the scooting behavior.

Your dog has glands on each side of its rectum and these glands get packed or infected. They have to be expressed at least once a month. The vet does an internal expression when it is needed but you have to ask them about it. I have been expressing my dog for years and he still got impacted and the vet had to do it internally. But if you keep doing it each month then this lessens the chance of infection and they will stop dragging their hinney on you carpet. Ask your vet to show you how to express them for the first time. Beware it smells very, very, very bad!!

Your dog needs to see a groomer. They can clean out your dogs anal glands. If this isnt done about every 2 months it causes pressure and itching. When you see her scratching her butt on the carpet she is trying to clean them out on her own. It is perfectly normal.

Possibilities, from what I know:
1. Worms-- take a recent stool sample to the vet
2. Inflamed scent glands-- give her a bath and ask your vet about allergies
3. Habit-- if she's had worms before, she might keep scooting even though there's no problem
4. No problem-- just an irrational need to scoot.

If your dog is dragging his/her butt across the floor I'd say it's anal glands are full. I have taken my own dog to the vet and had them expressed. You can do that yourself(I forget how)....but I never wanted to go there. Let the vet take the blame!

her anal glands are full. you can try expressing them on your own by putting some rubber gloves on and squeezing the sides of her anus while pushing towards her head. don't be afraid to squeeze too hard because you do need a good deal of pressure to do so. don't stand directly behind her because you will get squirted by some pretty nasty stuff. if you are afraid to do it a veterinarian or even a groomer will do it. you have to tell the groomer to express the anal glands or they wont do it

before you spend a bunch of money on a vet visit just go to a groomer and get the anal glands expressed. if that doesn't fix the problem then go for the vet to see if you can determine the cause.
