I feel your pain man, I've had the same problem for freaking years untill about 6 months ago. Here's what I do. First get rid of hair gel if you ise it. IT DRIES YOUR SCALP BAD. The reason for this, is because most of the hair gels have alcohol which dries out the skin. Once you get rid of that, go to wal mart or something and get a shampoo called Nizoral. This stuff is great! (if you can go to a doctor he can give you a script for the super strength stuff which is even better) Wash your hair with that. I used it everyday til It got better, now i use it every couple of days. Finally here's the ultimate trick. SCALP OIL. This stuff is good too, after I get out of the shower I put this stuff on my hair and it keeps my scalp from drying out. I use this stuff:
http://www.1800thewoman.com/miracle_oil....
(OK I know that says "the woman" but the stuff works and doesn't smell girlie)
Also one more thing. If you NEED Gel like I do, this is what i use:
http://www.aubrey-organics.com/product1....
It's all natural hair gel that won't jack up your scalp.
Hope this works for you, it's worked for me. Good luck.!!

It does sound like a flaky scalp which may be caused by over washing and not enough rinsing.
The next time you wash his hair, just put some water on it and then work hair into a lather. If it does lather it means you have been using too much shampoo and haven't rinsed enough.
My mum had a really bad dry scalp, mainly caused by Chemo, and it was recommended that she try a babies cradle cap shampoo. She used it twice a week and washed her hair as normal every other day, ensuring she rinsed well. After about 3 weeks she saw a vast improvement and now only washes her hair every 3 days. (not that she has much now bless her heart).
It might also be an idea to take him to the GP to get it looked at. Without seeing the actual scalp it is very hard for anyone to diagnose the real cause. it is best to rule out every other possiblity before trying new things.
Good luck.

Some falking scalp needs medical attention from a Dermetologist.
For one thing you are absolutely over shampooing his hair. I've been to beauty college, though I chose not to finish. Do not wash his hair more then every other day, unless it actually gets dirty, such as getting something in it.
Try a shampoo that says it's for dry hair, preferribly one that says for dandraff. All most dandraff is, is dry scalp.
Buy a basic HOT OIL treatment such as St. Ives from places like wal-marts, target. Use it, see if it gets better. Don't do it more then once a week and once the condition is gone, you'd not one to do it more then every two weeks.
You can get Pure Lanolin from any pharmacist without a perscription, it's only a few dollars for a small amount. If the hot oil doesn't work, try actually on a day off work rubbing that into his hair and down into his scalp. See if that can help get ride of his dry scalp, which is all dandraff is.
If you live in a really dry climate, try using a humidifier in the house to moisten the air. Winter cold also can cause dry scalp, so using a humidifier then can help during winter as well.
Our skin needs nutrients as well thorugh our body. If you like blueberries and blackberries, eat some of them every day for several weeks. They are known to help our skin, providing needed nutriants.
Above all, you can't wash dandruff or dry scalp away, so stop over washing, as you are washing out the essential oils the scap needs and will only make the condition worse over time.
If you try these things I've suggested over a two week period, never doing the HOT OIL more then once a week and the Lanolin more then every other day for several hours, then washing out the Lanolin. If all these things do not work, I highly recommend you consult a dermetologist as there are many skin conditions that will only heal with the proper medical treatment.
Good Luck

I have never found something that works completely but the best you can do is get sand and massage the scalp with it to get all the flakes out and then use the dandruff shampoo. Do not press the sand hard or you get scratches on the scalp and they just turn into more flakes. Good luck.

Only use anti-dandruff shampoos and ALWAYS condition. If his scalp is still that dry, he might just have a different oil balance and he can go longer without washing his hair at all. Too much washing can dry out skin on any part of your body.

Maybe dandruff shampoo, but it sounds like a serious case of dry scalp and could take more than that. Increase your condtioner use and decrease your shampoo, over doing shampoo is a really commen culprut of dry scalp plus you should go to a salon and get their hair done. They probaly have some product to help you.

His scalp is dry. I had the same problem. I used the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Shampoo and it helped me a lot. As well as Head and Shoulders. You may want to have him ask his doctor about it or even a dermatologist. Sometimes you can get weird diseases in your scalp that will cause it to do that.

If it's dandruff, boil fenugreek seeds with coconut oil and massage it into his scalp. Have him sleep in it over night (while wearing a shower cap of course), then have him wash it out in the morning.
Fenugreek seeds can be bought online at mountainroseherbs.com
