Im thinking about adopting an adult male weimaraner in which I don't know his past, but is very friendly at the shelter. My concern is that I have 3 cats and wonder if he will get along with them or if it will be possible to train him to. I know they are hard headed dogs.

It's so difficult to know what a dog's temperament is really like at the shelter because they're not themselves in that environment. Does this dog seem relatively calm or is he off the wall?

If you want him, get him. Before you take him home, put up a baby gate somewhere in your house that's convenient so the cats can get away from him. DO NOT introduce them on a leash - the leash will make him act more aggressive. Let them see each other through the baby gate, get used to each other's scent and make sure the dog is relatively calm before you ever let them in a room together. When you do, the cats need to be able to escape.

They don't have to be best friends, your object is for them to co-exist and with common sense, you should be able to bring that about. Since you know they can be pretty hard-headed, you know you'll need to do some training with him. Good luck!

Did you ask about this at the shelter? I am sure they have cats there as well as dogs. They should check on socialization with other animals as well as people of different sexes and ages.

At our local rescue, this is one of the things they check out in order to have as much info to give to prospective adopters as possible. They do this to help to keep returns low. I would guess that a good shelter would do the same.

As long as you introduce the Weimaraner to the cats gradually (and on a leash, to prevent him from trying to chase them around the house), he should be just fine.

Watch for signs of aggression, as that's all you should really have to be concerned about.

It is hard to say. I suggest asking someone who works their. If they are not sure then you should think about a different dog.
