Peter is speaking of people who have learned about Christ and how to be saved but then reject the truth and return to their sin. These people are worse off than before because they have rejected the only way out of sin, the only way of salvation. Like someone sinking in quicksand who refuses to grab the rope thrown to him or her, the person who turns away from Christ rejects the only means of escape.

The verse speaks of how man can lose his godly devotion and return to his old ways even after learning what the Bible says. There are certain reasons why one can fall away from the faith, one is from listening to false teachings.
Consider the former and following verses:
2 Peter 2:20 Certainly if, after having escaped from the defilements of the world by an accurate knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they get involved again with these very things and are overcome, the final conditions have become worse for them than the first. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have accurately known the path of righteousness than after knowing it accurately to turn away from the holy commandment delivered to them. 22 The saying of the true proverb has happened to them: “The dog has returned to its own vomit, and the sow that was bathed to rolling in the mire.”
So its like being clean and then returning to uncleanness. They are worse than those who are ignorant about God's word because they did not stand fast to hold it.

The apostle Peter accurately depicted what will continue to happen among God’s servants until “the day of judgment [for unrighteous people] to be cut off.” (2 Peter 2:9) There will always be persons who try to extend the limits of Christian freedom far beyond what is reasonable so that they can satisfy their desires for sensual pleasure. They do not want to follow the Biblical injunction: “Deaden, therefore, your body members that are upon the earth as respects fornication, uncleanness, sexual appetite, hurtful desire, and covetousness.” Instead, they choose the very entertainment that incites these wrong desires. When involving others, they may argue: ‘If our conscience allows it, there is nothing wrong with it.’ But they fail to recognize that a defiled conscience is not a safe guide. These persons are yielding to their wrong desires and are, therefore, in slavery to these. Their promises of “freedom” to others are misleading.
The result to those who are again plunged into a life of wrongdoing is indeed calamitous.
Why could the apostle Peter say what He did at 2 Peter 2:21? Once a person gains accurate knowledge of the Jesus Christ, he begins to see the need for making changes. He may give up heavy drinking, a life of immorality, gambling and other vices. By cleaning himself up to conform to what is expected of a disciple of Jesus Christ, the individual flees or escapes from the “defilements of the world,” from practices that he has come to know as being divinely disapproved. However, on again becoming entangled in God-dishonoring practices, he deliberately throws aside what he knows to be right. His knowledge of Jesus Christ and his Bible-trained conscience initially served as a restraint against wrong conduct. When breaking free from that wholesome restraint, he may well become even worse than before he took up the way of Christian discipleship. He may go beyond what men do who have no knowledge of the path of righteousness. This is because his conscience has become contaminated, or even seared, like dead tissue. If he had never known the right path, his bad conduct would not have disgraced so terribly the name of Christ, his sin would not have had the same gravity, and the divine judgment against him would not have needed to be as severe.

2 Pet 2:21 speaks of the Truth that Each and Every HUMAN being is exposed to! The TRUTH that all are Sinners and Need a Savior, CHRIST JESUS!
(Psa 98:2) The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.
(Heb 5:9) And being made perfect, HE [JESUS] became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
FIRST, Salvation is Eterenal!
YOU can do noting to Earn it and consequently you can do nothing to Loose it!
Please see Ephesians 2:8-to-1, Titus 3:5 and Eph 1:12-to-14 and Galatians 3:1-to-3.
I could go on and on but will leave you with Romans 8:All but especially Rom 8:9! After reading All of Romans 8, do you still think that you can loose your Salvation?
Thanks, RR

This passage speaks of sin, not salvation.
There is only one unpardonable sin, and that's denial (or turning your back on) the Holy Spirit.
I believe God loves us so much that He has made is just about impossible NOT to acknowledge Him once we know Him. When we give our lives to Chirst, it's very very difficult for us not to acknowledge who He is and what He has done for us. And the more you get to know Him, the more difficult it becomes.
We are all sinners, however and although we stive to be all the God wants us to be - everything we do will fall short because of the curse of sin. That doesn't mean we don't continue to strive though. This passage tells us that some of us do give up. They continue to act and speak in their own sin rather than sitting at the foot of the Lord to learn - believing that they will be forgiven anyway. They are deceived, and will be held accountable. God doesn't want this for us at all.
There are those, however, who do deny the deity of Christ and reject the Holy Spirit - those will be the ones (unfortunately) who will have to endure the sight of Christ turning His back on them. How sad.

Yes, as do many other passages of Scripture. The idea that salvation cannot be lost is one of the points of Calvinism. Unfortunately, 5-point Calvinism is a doctrinal system based on its own internal logic, and does not conform to Scripture.

I, personally, don't think so. According to John, those who leave were never of us to begin with.
"They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us." (1 John 2:19)
Plus, the Bible says that God is faithful to His people & He will finish what He started in us.
"And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ." (Philippians 1:6)
And Jesus also promises that He will keep all that the Father has given Him & raise them up at the last day.
"And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day." (John 6:39)

Yes. Christians are not once saved always saved. This dogma is unbiblical.
Mt 24:13 those who PERSEVERE to the end will be saved.
Many other biblical passage affirm that once saved always saved is false.
