Yes they can but, hopefully, as they get older they will make more real friends and not need the imaginary ones any more.

Indeed they can, not all atheists are internally consistent, in my mind atheism is a necessary but not sufficient condition on the way to intellectual honesty.

no, they are not allowed to have imaginary entities. It would spoil their whole existence and purpose.
