The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

I got identified with herpes virus (type 2) about four years ago, whilst I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I know loads of people say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden I felt like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date other men again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone who has sores around her "you know what" area? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/6NlzG everything got better.
Not only was I able to remove all remnants of the herpes simplex virus from my system in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the man of my dreams and I'm so fortunate to write that just a week ago, in front of everybody in a crowded restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me! This system provided the chance to be happy and experience real love again. Now I want to help others too by sharing this story.

I'm not a doctor, but if I have a classic sore throat coming on, like one associated with the onset of a winter cold, I usually gargle with warm salt water, and/or eat lemons with salt. It may not cure one, but it usually helps mine not be so severe.....unless, of course, the throat is infected with something like strep. i also keep the lozenges and jolly ranchers going inbetween gargles or lemons! nothing hurts my sore throats worse than letting the throal get dry!! oh yeh, sometimes i'll gargle and drink OJ. not too much, though.

Gargling with warm salt water a few times a day works wonders on a sore throat. I would also recommend plenty of fluids and take some Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body's own immune system combat viruses.

This has always helped with my family. Gargle, (but don't swallow), 1/2 Listerine mouthwash with 1/2 hydrogen peroxide.

This might sound a bit silly but it works wonders, I promise. Take some Tixylix, it's a baby medicine, I know, but it really really helps a sore throat, no matter how old you are. Hope you are both well soon. xx

Ah we are all suffering in my state from the same bug. Try gargling with warm salt water (just use regular table salt). It has always helped me.
