An act of obedience.

The hijab is an act of obedience to Allah and to his prophet (pbuh), Allah says in the Qur'an: `It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allah and His messenger have decreed a matter that they should have an option in their decision. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger, has indeed strayed in a plain error.' (S33:36).

Allah also said: 'And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things) and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc) and not to show off their adornment except what must (ordinarily) appear thereof, that they should draw their veils over their Juyubihinna.'(S24:31).

`Be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease (of hypocrisy or evil desire for adultery, etc) should be moved with desire, but speak in an honourable manner.' (S33:32)

Aisha (The wife of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) said, “May Allah have mercy on the immigrant women (from Makkah). When Allah revealed ‘that they should draw their veils over their juyubihinna*,’ they tore their wrappers and covered their heads and faces with them.” [Bukhari]

The word *Juyubihinna, according to most scholars, refers to the head, ears, neck and chest. To fulfil the minimum requirements of Hijab, a Muslim woman covers her entire body, except her face and hands. Once Asma, daughter of Abu Bakr, entered upon the Prophet wearing thin clothes. The Prophet turned his attention from her. He said, “O Asma, when a woman reaches the age of menstruation, it does not suit her that she displays her parts of body except this and this,” and he pointed to his face and hands. [Abu Dawud].

Surah an-Nur verse 31 reads:

And say to the faithful women to lower their gazes, and to guard their private parts, and not to display their beauty except what is apparent of it, and to extend their headcoverings (khimars) to cover their bosoms, and not to display their beauty except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their womenfolk, or what their right hands rule (slaves), or the followers from the men who do not feel sexual desire, or the small children to whom the nakedness of women is not apparent, and not to strike their feet (on the ground) so as to make known what they hide of their adornments. And turn in repentance to God together, O you the faithful, in order that you are successful.

YUSUFALI: And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands....

PICKTHAL: And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms, and not to reveal their adornment save to their own husbands...

SHAKIR: And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof, and let them wear their head-coverings over their bosoms, and not display their ornaments except to their husbands...

So there you go THREE translations of the verse you mentioned. All I see is that women are supposed to cover their "Bosoms", nothing about head or neck or hair. So what ever you are claiming is "required" is only another one of the Sheikh's biased opinions. Another one of his ways to control females in our society.

BTW shouldn't we also hold the men responsible to for their lustful thoughts? Isn't that the only reason why all the Mullahs claim that a woman should cover her head b/c it provokes lustful thoughts amongst men?

Update: Actually I think thats the one verse that I have read over and over. All I see is it being mandatory for women to cover their bosoms and then the verse goes on to describe the people in front of whom the veil is not required. And in the end it says that one should obey Allah. All I am saying that the whole Head covering part is NOT in the quran but rather a manifestation by the Sheikhs and the self proclaimed Mullahs out there. Only Allah Knows the best.

And where exactly in what you have quoted does it say "Hijab is a compulsion in Islam" where? Dress protecting there private parts, not to show off adornments and draw veils over there Juyubinhinna ( decollete area or chest area ). You are reading into it what you want. Yes Muslim women dress and act modestly and i myself wear a scarf but i do not have to wear a Hijab. Do you what a hijab is exactly? It is a full dress including a veil only showing face and hands. There is no compulsion to wear it, you are wrong.

I'm not saying muslim women should not cover there heads. But you stating "hijab is not a choice in Islam" is simply not true. Hijab is a very specific garment. To cover yes, to be modest yes, not to attract attention to yourself yes, wear a hijab as compulsary sorry but NO.
