Sodium Valporate is the generic medicine prescribed to patients with bipolar mood swings. Is there any serious side effects of prolonged doses of more than 800 mg per day, any physical or mental impairment?

sodium valproate is also a broad spectrum antiepileptic drug
that means, taken by many many patients worldwide
for continous years
max dose is 50-60 mg/kg/day
most feared side effect is hepatic impairment
so follow up liver enzymes every 3-6 months
others: rash, GIT upset, sedation.........etc

I'm in the U.S. and as far as I can tell in my Prescription Drug book we don't have that drug over here....yet anyway.
But I do want to say this. I am bipolar. It is very common to put a person with bipolar on a drug that was originally made for epilesy. Tegretol and Depakote are two drugs often used here in the U.S. anyway.
You should, however, know everything you need to know about your dosage before taking it. Please don't let the "possible side effects" keep you from trying a new med that could possibly help you get well. Treating bipolar can be difficult, sometimes it can take quite sometime to find just the right combo of meds to help you.

sodium valproate is the generic medicine more commonly known in Australia as "Epilim" which is just one of the brand names and is also used in the treatment of epilepsy...

the dose of sodium valproate depends on the severity of the condition and the physical weight of the body...

next time you get a prescription filled ask the pharmacist for an information leaflet on the drug.. they should provide them free of charge.. then read the leaflet and write down your questions and go and ask your doctor..

my daughter has epilepsy and has been on sodium valproate since infancy she is 18 now...

I would not venture to offer medical advice but would encourage you to ask these questions of your pharmacist and doctor...
