Well, I currently I am being treated for Sinusitis. Anyways, I cough constantly at night. Sometimes the whole night leaving me without sleep. Lately, my mom is going all upset because she hates seeing me coughing so much. She is SO dramatic, I'm the sick one and I'm not even upset. She makes it sound like I have this deadly disease. I don't. The anti-biotics take awhile to kick in, and the doctor and pharmacists keep telling my mom that I'll be okay and that the cough takes awhile. [ She tends to ask the pharmacist a lot when I'll get rid of the cold, everytime its the same answer ] Last night I didn't sleep that much because of the cough and because I was missing my friends from school, and because I hate seeing my mom so upset and distraught over a silly issue.

I'm improving, and the anti-biotics are working. My mom seems to think that I'm never going to get rid of this. Which I am. The doctors don't seem concerned, so why should my mom?

How can I help my mom be less uptight?

Oh my god, my mom was such a spazz every time I would get sick as a teenager, too, as though the illness that I couldn't help but get was my fault and such an inconvenience to her. Hated it. She would actually make me feel guilty for puking and missing school, so I know how you feel.

Unfortunately, as I've learned in my 22 years with an overbearing and good-intentioned but less-than-rational mother, mothers don't change. You're kind of stuck with them. Try not to let her behavior bother you; it's not something you're going to be able to "talk her out of." You can tell a mother that she's pissing you off and you wish she would stop acting a certain way, or try to prove your point in a thoroughly reasonable and logical manner, until you're blue in the face, and the words and meanings and logic will, many times, never sink in. If it was that easy to talk a person out of any upsetting or destructive or irritating behavior, the world would be trouble-free. Accept it as something that you've learned about her as a person that she has not yet learned about herself.

As for the cough, not sleeping at night is no good no matter what you're sick with. If you tell your doctor it's bothering you (your body needs sleep to get well), he can probably prescribe something. Otherwise I at least recommend you take ibuprofen to relax your muscles. Perhaps eat more soup. Coughing all night sucks.

The best over the counter cough syrup is Delsyn and it costs about $10 at any drug store or WalMart. Two years in a row I had that cough for three months before it went away. I'll be praying for you Honey.

take some cough medicine and tell your mom to stop worrying. The cough always goes away.

All the cough medicines have the same active ingredient, so it doesn't really matter which one you pick. Delsym lasts longer, but doesn't work better.

It's wonderful that your mother loves you and is worried about you and you health,But you are going to have to tell her what you just told me.
She is going to just realize that it is going to take time to recover and realize that the doctor knows best.
I have coughing spells at night my self and my partner worries about it, but like you my doctor isn't worried and neither am I - it happens every winter and clears in the spring, and I am used to it as well. I don't like it, but I have learned to live with it. Your mother is just going to have Patience and not to worry unless it becomes worst.
