It is thought that dogs may choose to roll in foul-smelling things to mask their scent, just as wolves do. Wolves may roll in decomposing carcasses or the feces of herbivores (plant eating animals) to disguise themselves. They want to cover their own odors so their prey will not be alarmed by their scent. This way, they can sneak up on their prey and have a better chance of making a kill.
Some behaviorists feel dogs may roll in smelly things to 'advertise' what they have found to other dogs.
No matter the reason, unfortunately, some of our domesticated friends have held onto this trait. How many of us have given a dog a bath only to find him running outside to again roll in something foul?

its just something they do.. we live on the beach too.. and my dog finds the most lovely things to roll in down there... I dont know how to discourage the rolling in stinky things behavior.. all we can do is keep her on the leash and pull her up if she takes a sudden dive twords the ground.
One time.. at the dog park, she rolled in another dogs poop. Lovely.

Dogs have many revolting habits don't they? Most of them we can work out the reasons for ourselves, but this one is not so obvious. Perhaps they just like being dirty sods!

while dogs have been wild dogs they used the scent of lifeless animals to conceal their very own heady scent. That allowed them to get very close to to their prey devoid of being observed. IDK why they do no longer roll on mice/birds could desire to be the dimensions.
