It's a combination of things...as you sleep, if you have food particles between your teeth that you didn't floss or brush away the night before, bacteria are feasting on that food and changing it to the same thing our own bodies change it to. Use your imagination. The smell comes from protein breakdown, and it smells the same as protein breakdown in your own body. EEEWwwwwwww, I know, but that's the sad fact. The best preventive is to go to bed with a VERY CLEAN mouth, and also keep the back of your tongue clean by taking a toothbrush or spoon or a commercial tongue cleaner and scraping from the back of your tongue toward the front. If you don't believe me, just sniff the stuff that comes off!

Sleeping with your mouth open causes dryness of the tissues which just increases the problem. .

Probably because you're slightly dehydrated and when you're dehydrated your breath tends to smell. Just drink a big class of water afterwards and give your teeth and tounge a good scrub (: Take care x

Floss and brush you teeth at night. And keep some breath mints by the bed you never know who will knock on the door when you are sleep.
