My Fiance and I are planning a very small wedding in mexico with just parents and siblings. Do we tell the rest of the family and friends at our engagement party? Or let them find out later?

Congradulations on your engagement! having a small wedding is fantastic too I did that with my last wedding and I loved it! If people start to ask you when you are getting married be polite and say we really havn't set a date yet or you can say we are thinking of havign immediate family only in mexico, so we can share the memories of our special day with our parents and brothers and sisters

You can have a huge party when you get back to help celebrate the marriage with family and friends.

Good luck!

Where I come from, 20 people is a good-size wedding. I got married in my home country (1st marriage), and we did a run-of-the-mill wedding ceremony at the "wedding palace" (it's like city hall on steroids - it is actually situated in one of those palaces that used to belong to some count a long time ago before the red revolution; so it has the sweeping staircases and beautiful halls and all that). I had about 15 ppl attending; after the ceremony, we all went back to the house (I was living at my parents' house then, I was 18), and had a sit-down dinner that my mom put together - more or less a traditional Russian dinner with vodka and caviar and this kind of thing. 2nd marriage was here in the US, we drove to Vegas for a weekend - just the two of us - and got married in a small chapel. I bought my first car in lieu of having a wedding; irony - been divorced for 8 years now, still drive the car. 3rd (and current) marriage - Did it in a fun and low-budget way at a Renaissance faire. All "vendors" were friends, free of charge (the minister, the videographer, the photographer, the musicians). Lots of onlookers: a Renn faire is a public event. We had the costumes, the sword salute, the medieval songs; after the ceremony we all headed to the lake and shot blackpowder cannons. Everything was very casual - no "reception" or anything like that - just a few trays of food from a nearby deli, and a ton of rum and other spirits. It was a lot of fun; I'd do it all over again if I had the chance.

You can send out wedding announcements, or just tell them at the next family gathering. Don't worry about offending them, I think it's great just having it for parents and siblings. You might want to include grandma and grandpa, but don't feel obligated to, it is, after all, YOUR wedding. Congrats and good luck!

Only those invited to the wedding should be invited to an engagement party. Send announcements to anyone who needs to know as soon as you return home from the wedding.

You can tell them if you want.
Send your announcements out the day of the wedding.

Let them find out later. It will be a huge surprise to them and they will be more happy. If you told them now they would not be so surprised later. Save it.
