Oppositional defiant disorder is a pattern of disobedient, hostile, and defiant behavior towards authority figures. The pattern must persist for at least six months and must go beyond the bounds of normal childhood misbehavior.
Symptoms are:
A pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior lasting at least 6 months, during which four (or more) of the following are present:

often loses temper
often argues with adults
often actively defies or refuses to comply with adults' requests or rules
often deliberately annoys people
often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior
is often touchy or easily annoyed by others
is often angry and resentful
is often spiteful or vindictive
If someone is over 18 then it is called Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Oppositional Defiance Disorder is a real condition and my son was diagnosed with this at age five...

it literally means what it is called... if asked to take a seat a person with ODD will prefer to stand.. if ordered to sit they will definitely stand..

it literally means doing the opposite in defiance....

it does not have to make you everybodys enemy and it can be overcome... it will always be a battle to overcome it but it can be overcome... my own son also had ED (emotional disturbance) and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) as well as his ODD. these days he is struglling through his middle teens but is winning... he liked by many people... has friends and people genuinely and generally like him...

If you met him these days you would not think he had so many problems in his life but if you had seen his behaviour in the first 8 years of his life you would have thought he was the devils own...

ODD is a defiant resistant to doing what you are asked... required or need to do... rebelling to the max...

but dont give in and say... oh I have ODD I cant help it... instead say I will defiantly resist ODD... I will do what I need to do and wat is required of me because it is the right thing to do...

Oppositional Defiance as a disorder? I think they used to call it teenage rebellion. Or possibly just being pissed off at injustice. Or possibly any reaction to any myriad of things that are worth getting pissed off at. Then again, perhaps you use oppositional defiance as a way to distance yourself from people, as a way of avoiding intimacy. The field is simply too wide open to what it might be, but this has been my stab at it. Hopefully something resonates with you.
