Dighton is apparently one of those geographical names which relates back to where people came from. In the case of Dighton, most likely the dike enclosure around farms - "dic" old English for ditch; "tun" old English for settlement or enclosure. A variation of the name is Deighton and there are a number of places with that name around Yorkshire.

There IS a connection to Dighton and British royalty. Edward IV, died leaving his two young sons as his heirs. His brother, Richard had the two princes imprisoned in the Tower of London and assumed the throne as Richard III. They were never seen again and were presumed to be murdered. Okay, here's the connection! One theory is that John Dighton, horse-keeper to Sir James Tyrell was enlisted (along with Miles Forest) to carry out the dirty deed.

Well, hope that was at least semi-interesting.
