My sister plays oboe and clarinet. I want to be in band when I get into junior high but I don't know what I want to play yet.

I'm a clarinet player, so I'm a bit biased. I would recommend it to anyone, it is really fun to play and you often get very challenging music to tackle.

I also recommend the french horn. It is the most gorgeous sounding brass instrument. Any band would love to have one, the same goes for bassoon. I don't recommend percussion, unless your school really needs some. There are usually a ton of percussion players, and this will cut down on your playing time. Also, percussionists have to wait a LOT in band, there are songs where you might only play for 4 measures, and have 70 measures of rest. Be prepared for this! Percussion and brass are pretty much "the bomb" in marching band though, they have much of the main music to play.

Many schools offer an instrument try-out day, but be careful, because I know the one by me didn't even offer french horn or bassoon as an option.

If you want to play jazz I wouldn't take on bassoon, though french horn is still okay because you could either play jazzy french horn or switch to trumpet for jazz band. Honestly, you could make any instrument work for jazz (yes, even flute!).

Clarinets are beautiful but pretty common. However, if you like it and will play it well, go for it! There's always bass clarinet.
Saxes are fun because you can go anywhere from soprano to baritone.
I don't know much about flutes since I don't play them.
I'm a bassoon player at heart, and I absolutely adore them! They are beautiful, difficult, and characters of their own.
French horn is my absolute favorite brass. It sounds almost like a clarinet in brass. It's also difficult but is a great option.
That's all I'll talk about. Whatever you choose, the biggest issue is to practice hard and enjoy the music. If you do that, you'll be just fine with any instrument.

I love the oboe, but don't have the patience to relearn to play one. I currently play flute and clarinet.

I play the flute, so I guess that makes it my fave band instrument! If you want to play the drums, you'll be in the percussion section whereby you have to learn how to play ever percussion instrument, at least that's for my band.

I learnt music from the age of 5 and I started with the Euphonium. To me this is the most beautiful instrument in existence.

Bass Clarinet...perfect for someone who doesn't mind being the only one playing their instrument.

o0o DRUMS!!! I always wanted to play drums, but when I was younger I got stuck with the saxophone. I had a "N" (needs improvement) grade every term in elementary school for music. But I would have been great with DRUMS!! Play drums!
