There is no set time on when an officer can leave after he/she issues a citation. Depending on what is going on, they may need to leave immediately after having you sign the ticket, to leaving just after making the inital contact with you. You can go to the station, but odds are it won't help you and they will just tell you to take it to court if you feel that you were not going that fast.

Sure they are! What would that have to do with the validity of the citation??

It's usually up to local policy; often they stick around until you leave so you can pull away from the side of the road safely. But even if he broke local policy it's not going to affect the validity of the citation you received. Consider also the likelihood that he received a radio call that required his immediate attention; why should he stick around for you to leave?

At 21 over, be very thankful that he only wrote a ticket. In many jurisdictions that constitutes reckless driving or driving to endanger and is an arrestable offense. You've actually come out of this one pretty easily.

If you want to contest the ticket, get a lawyer. See if he can plead it down to something less and save you a point or two on your license as well as minimize the increase in your insurance premiums.

I think you have a great point. Go to the police station, ask for the chief and tell him to rip up the ticket because the officer left before you. Should be fun.

If they gave you your copy of the ticket and returned your license, you are free to go. Its not his fault you didn't leave while he walked back to his car. Go to the department and tell the person at the desk what happened. He could probably use a laugh.

Once you get your ticket the officer can leave anytime they want to. We have no policy in regards to who leaves first. Sometimes if you are parked behind someone on the shoulder of the road it is safer for the cruiser to leave first as it clears the view to the rear for the offender's vehicle so that they can merge back into traffic.

Nothing requires the officer to stay until after you go.
