Approximately 35% of Americans believe the bible is the literal and inerrant word of God. Most of these people also date the Big Bang 2500 years AFTER the Babylonians learned how to brew beer. Now, don't get me wrong, these are generally good, honest, hard-working people - your neighbors and mine. But pretending to enjoy rationality alongside the psychological consolation of self-deception is hurting mankind's advancement, if not the planet's. Moderate voices should speak up. Or am I wrong?

If the bible cannot be taken literally then Jesus was not a real man and he did not die on the cross. You cannot pick and choose things you want. I choose to live on faith not theories (educated guesses not fact). My history book is the bible, if you don't beleive in creationism that is fine for you, not me.

I'm a full scientist. An evolutionist. Evolution created us, not god. However, I believe that everyone is allowed their opinion, and if it makes people feel more comfortable to believe there is a god that created everything, then fair enough, I can't see any bad in it. I doubt there is much benefit to society by knowing that our distant relatives are fishes. How is not believing things like the big bang hurting mankind's advancement?
However! I DO think it is wrong that children are brought up to believe the bible and its stories are true. They should be allowed the choice to believe what they want. They should be educated about both aspects.

I'm guessing your point is that many many many Americans are uneducated or simply incapable of making up their minds, and that this is scary.
As a moderate voice, I agree.
A word of advice to the general population of America: Read before you think, think before you believe, believe before you say. Safeguard knowledge and reason!
PS. People, don't freak out about questions like this! I'm a Christian, and I see nothing wrong with this question. It has nothing to do with infringement of religious beliefs or negative attitudes.

It just shows how humans will believe anything. These people also think that God is the reason why the US is so powerful today. They make people seem weaker than we really are by attributing everything the human race accomplishes to God's magic.

you are wrong on either your beer brewing date or on your guess as to what date Christians assign to the "big bang" - but besides that, I would guess that the percentage of 35% "literalists" is way too high.

Yes, this is very scary stuff. I don't think "moderate voices" will get us anywhere though. What these people need is education. It is cruel to allow them to wallow in ignorance like that.
On an unrelated note, I like your name.
