I have the same problem.. you have to get the curling iron right up against your scalp, which is hard because you could burn yourself. My stylist taught me this trick on the say of my wedding (when she curled my hair) Take a spoon and hold it right against your scalp, then let the curler rest on that, as close to your scalp as you can get it. That way, it can be right up against your head without burning you. Its weird looking, but it works!

Spiral curls are not done close to the roots. Try curling the hair from the roots to the ends but remember that the hair cools down the iron so slide the iron down slowly then grab the ends in then clip and roll up.. Grab a section and roll the roots around the iron while holding the ends in your hand...then clip the ends and roll up...practice practice practice. And use small sections and roll foreword everything, maybe the bangs back...maybe
