Usually the dose is divided. 0.75-1.5g per day, divided into 3 doses for an adult. 300-600mg/day in divided doses if you are pregnant. You should talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your symptoms. Do not just break up the tablet yourself unless they tell you to in case it has a special coating. They may decide to give you different pills for divided dosage, switch to a different form of iron suppliment, or have you take it with meals even though it will decrease absorbtion to reduce the irritating effect on your gastrointestinal system. (For best absorption, you are supposed to wait an hour after or before meals, esp. dairy products or caffeine, which decrease absorption). If you are taking it within an hour before bed, this may cause more stomach irritation. The suppliment is harsh on the stomach, dairrhea and black or greenish stools are common adverse effects. Toxicity symptoms may involve (not limited to or determined specifically by): nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tarry stools, pale skin, bluish tinge to lips and nails. Definately talk to your doctor just in case.

That is probably too much, and unless perscribed my an MD, probably unnecessary.

Ferrous sulfate is one the most easily absorbed form of iron, as a food supplement. As you discovered too much iron can be toxic. However, the usual symptom is constipation. Most people get enough iron from regular diet: Green vegetables (raw or cooked) and red meat. For vegetarians, or others who avoid red meat, it is necessary to get enough green vegetables, like spinach, in the diet.

You may also be allergic to this mineral form.

My suggestion is to stop taking it, unless prescribed by your doctor.
