What format is your video stored on? If it is a digital format like DVC or miniDV tape then you can read them into your computer using something like Movie Maker. If they are on older analog tape (VHS, 8mm, VHS-C) then you will either need a video device (you can find those at Best Buy or Circuit City) or could possibly burn them to a DVD if you have a DVD player that records.

Be advised. This sort of thing will take a lot of time and a lot of hard drive space. I edited some Disney World vacation footage and it used over 10 gigs of hard drive space.

I have been burning my old 8mm tapes (video not film) to DVD using a DVD player that records. However I have not tried reading those DVDs into an editor.

I use Digital 8 via a firewire but for older conversions i use a Dazzle video card that connects via USB and has an RCA (yellow, red and white) input and also an S-Video connection... Also windows movie maker isnt really that good for editing, if you get the Dazzle creator theres a bit of software that comes with it, still basic but its better than movie maker... Theres loads of options out there tho...

You can buy a gadget called a 'videosafe' (£40 from Staples). But it takes ages to convert them.
