there is no one root cause for anorexia. It's a very complex disease and it really is a disease. I am a recovering anorexic and i can tell you from experience and lots of therapy that there's no real one cause. Usually people with anorexia share some common characteristics: they're usually somewhat OCD, they're quite often perfectionists and no matter how perfect things are they still don't think they're good enough, they have low self esteem and poor body images, anorexics often have body dismorphia (where even when they're really thin they see a fat person in the mirror, they're not just making that up) also, often people with anorexia have a problem or just their life in general that they feel is out of their control and they're trying to exert some form of control in their lives.
These are just a few of the reasons or causes. Each case is different with different causes, reasons, and outcomes. It often takes at least a couple of years for someone attempting to recover from anorexia to recover and many people will never recover fully (some will never recover at all, they often die from heart failure, mal-nutrition, suicide, and many other complications). There is no one cure for this disease. Therapy and counseling is usually necessary, along with support from doctors, nutritionist, family, and caring friends. Sometimes hospitalization is necessary.
I hope this helps.

Anorexia is caused by self-esteem issues usually, (OCD can contribute, though). Anorexics perception is skewed as a result of these self esteem problems and they see themselves as fat. They restrict their food intake to basically nothing so they can feel they have some control in their lives, so dramatic trauma is also a big factor. It's not about being superficial or not religious...it's a much deeper problem.

I think it is an anxiety disorder. A kind of break down or mental block against eating caused by not being able to deal/cope with the level of anxiety experienced on a day to day basis.
Don't trust anyone that claims to be educated on this, it is unknown and as yet there are only theories.

well sometimes anorexia can be caused by stress. for example anorexia nervousa(I think that's how u spell it) is when you are feeling stressed, u just stop eating (just like some people when they are stressed they EAT!) and then after a while you weight drops and etc...! it is also hard to become healthy again!
oh and sometimes problem childhoods can lead to anorexia in older ages!(20-30)

Basically it all begins by looking in a mirror and seeing all their faults. The person then starts starving themselves and then even when they are disgustingly skinny the person sees only repulsive fat. They have major self-esteem problems and it takes much help for the person to get through it. Most people die of suicide versus starvation.

I think it starts with an obsessive compulsive behavior, then goes bad from there. The person feels like they have no control of anything, and in order to feel control they take things to an extreme level.

Self esteem issues. I think anorexics may also have OCD issues but not always.
