If you are going to look for career opportunities yourself, think about what other skills and interests you have. The interpreting and translating you will enjoy most will be in the subject fields you are experienced or interested in. Then try to find Japanese companies here, or companies in your country with business in Japan related to your interests, if you can.
I worked for two years as an interpreter on a power station construction project in Canada. The design of the station was awarded to a Japanese company, and they soon found themselves in over their head on language and cultural issues. I was in the right place at the right time (I was working in an office involved in the engineering of the project) and discretely inquired with my boss about whether I could help them out. Two weeks later I was assigned to the site as "technical translator". I have no technical qualifications, but I have always been interested in engineering and construction, and I loved every minute of that job. I was attached to the chief Japanese engineer, and by the end of that project I had learned more about the construction and workings of a power station than most of the people on site.
I also enjoy wood construction, and would probably enjoy working for a company trading building materials with Japan, but it will have to wait until next year as I have returned to school to study international business.

Working for the government is a great way to utilize your language.

The government will not only give you an opportunity to communicate with Japanese people, but they will also pretect you and your family with full benefits.

If you work for the CIA for example, you will have free benefits such as: free movie tickets, free membership to gym ect.

They will also pay for you when you travel to Japan or relocate to another area.

Go to yahoo or google and search government jobs or CIA jobs that need a japanese translator.

Good luck.
