I just read an amazing book called Mountains Beyond Mountains. It is about Paul Farmer who is an infectious disease doctor from Harvard who spends the majority of his time in Haiti. I would strongly recommend this book to you. It filled me with a desire to help others. Dr. Farmer is an amazing man and a real inspiration to those he works with. Good luck in your future plans.

The people of Africa need all kinds of doctors. So specialize in something you're highly interested in. Africa has a lot of sick children. Look into statistics of needed Pediatricians in Africa. Also, try and contact organizations that send out doctors to third world countries. They can give you precise information on which specializations are vastly needed.
I know Doctors without Borders is one corp. you can get some information from. Hope it helps. Good luck.
PS. You're amazing for wanting to want to do this! :)

Doctors of all specialties can plan a busman's holiday. Some subspecialties take a lot of ancillary support and require more planning than others, though.
Medicins sans Frontieres had a booth at the American College of Emergency Physicians' scientific assembly a couple of months ago in New Orleans. But there are plenty of places nearer home that resemble the same work. I promise.

I've heard they need doctors to do proper delivery of babies in Africa. The women there quite often are damaged internally after a delivery and then are shunned by people because they become incontinent with their bowels. I can't remember what the condition is called. Women really need major care over there because of all the rape and abandonment that goes on.

you can go to less developed countries from just about any specialty, but for absolute need primary care physicians are probably the best suited. doctors go for a number of reasons. there are a number who enjoy the excitement and challenge of practicing in an impoverished region -- also these engagements are usually short term from several weeks to years.

No this isn't a count of decision, the scientific expert hasn't hindsight and cant see into the destiny, in line with possibility no human beings could die that day or possibly the ten human beings could have died even had she been at artwork. there's no relation to the docs option to fish and yet another persons loss of life different than if she had for understanding of each and every persons time of loss of life to be there to steer clear of it.

The kind of doctor who goes to third-world countries is a person who was raised right. He/she is compassionate and won't sit by while others suffer. These people should be respected and revered for all their days.......

God bless you for doing the right thing.......

I think most of the post above (except one obnoxious response) answer your question. It's gratifying to see someone interested in the real calling of the medical profession: To help others. Rather than only being interested in material goods.

May you find the intangible rewards of helping the helpless far more rewarding than anything material could offer.
