Dogs do not understand breeds at all. They just know dogs are dogs. I wouldn't worry about the breed of dog...if you find a calm dog you like, introduce it to your dog and see if they'll get along. Introduce them at a neutral place so neither of them feels dominant on their home turf.
I would definitely work on finding a calm, submissive dog for your 2nd dog because the Cocker you have will undoubtedly be the dominant dog since she's older and has been in the house longer. You don't want 2 dominant dogs or there will be fighting and that makes everyone stressed out.

The breed won't matter to her. but the puppiness business might be rather hard on her. All that puppy biting and peeing and jumping on her. I think that it's rather cruel to get a puppy for an older dog to have to put up with. Sort of like how it's cruel to leave the kids at Grandmas and Grandpas for a long time. The old ones need to have peace and quiet and young ones are so rowdy and loud.
If you do this give the old gal time away from the puppy everyday for a good long nap in peace. She's earned her peaceful old age.

The dog will not care about the breed of the newcomer. All she'll care about, is the fact there's a newcomer. Introduce them outside of the house, at a park or somewhere else neutral. Make sure that they get along (A puppy might be too much energy for a 12 yr old dog.)
Make sure she knows that she's not forgotten.

Ummm, i dont think so but you may put stress on her because she is an older dog (you might want to get a middle aged dog 1-2 years old) i would make sure if your cocker is a female you get a male puppy DO NOT get a female your cocker may not like anouther female (she might think it is trying to get more dominant)

Whatever breed it is really doesn't make a difference. I would suggest getting an adult cocker instead of a puppy. A puppy is going to be much too hyper for your older dog.

I WOULD GET ANOTHER 1. A LONG TIME AGO, MY MOM AMD DAD HAD 2 DOGS THE SAME BREEDS. WHEN MY MOM BROUGHT HOME MATTIE TO JORDAN ALL THEY DID WAS SMELL EACH OTHER. BUT IN ANOTHER CASE WHEN MATTIE PASSED AWAY WE GOT ANOTHER DOG NAMED ADDIE AND THEY GOT INTO A FEW FIGHTS A FIRST BUT NOW THEY ARE BESTFRIENDS! SO I WOULD GET 1 AND JUST INTERDUSE THEM SLOWLEY. LIKE HOLD THEM BOTH ON LEASHES. AND GET 2 PEOPLE TO HOOLD THE LEASH. PULL THEM BACK IF THEY START GROWLING. OK, GOOD LUCK HOPE I HELPED!!! ALSO TREAT THEM WITH THE SAME ATTENTION. AND LOVE OF COURSE. I HAVE 2 GIRL DOGS RIGHT NOW, ADDIE AND JORDAN. IT DOES NOT REALLY MATTER THE SEX. HOPE I HELPED!

OK this is from personal experience. i have a 3 year old shiba inu, a female, last year i got a male shiba inu. the female gets jealous at times, but the play a lot, so they dint hate each other. basically, yes she will get jealous, but most dogs get over that, and accept the new puppy!

Give your older dog the alpha dog treatment. Walk it first. Feed it first. So your older dog will know that after you (your the leader of the pack, right?) it is still the next in line.
