We were advized to put a cone around his head so he won't bite the stitches out for 1 week. Sadly, however, my puppy is heartbroken with the cone and cries. So we bought a muzzle to be less cruel and put it on him. He still is all sad!

Any advice? Should we stop using these devices?

Ok the reason the dog licks its wounds is that the healing has began. Just like yours would. Now your vet should have given antibiotics to help with the healing...try putting some neo-sporin cream. Also after you use that your dog may want to lick the cream off...Also use Apple Bitter spray on the wound. You dog wont want to lick the wound anymore.....

If that dosent not work... then for a week endure the whining. Use the cone. muzzles wont stop the licking. There are What I call doggie downers..Tripophan. They sell it at pet stores like petsmart, petco....

Most dogs don't need a cone or a muzzle after neutering. I would suggest trying him without either one and keeping an eye on him to see if he bothers his incision. If he does then you will need to use the cone again. I recommend a cone over a muzzle since it is better for the dog.

He will get used to the cone and it is better than the muzzle in the long run. It is only a week... I know I would be upset if someone neutered me for wayy more than just a week!

Unless he was really going after the stitches at the vets, I do not understand why they reccomended this? As long as you are supervising, leave the cone (E-collar) or muzzle off. If he is chewing at the stitches then, I would put them on when you can't be with him (working or sleeping).

I do rescue and have had many dogs spayed and neutered. None of them has ever needed a cone. If the pup starts to chew or lick the stitches, then he would need one. If he leaves his stitches alone, then he doesn't. Try leaving the cone and muzzle off and see what he does.

The cone is less confining for him. It is alright for him to be sad. He will get over it, it is only for one week. Give him lots of attention and loving. He will be fine. The last thing you want is to allow him access to those stitches, that would end up in him being more than just a little sad!

If I used either one, I would use the cone. With a muzzle, he can't open his mouth at all, you will have to take it off when he eats, drinks, etc. He is just not used to wearing either one of these so he is protesting against them. He will be okay.

the internet internet site maximum possibly skill all dogs sufficiently old to get rabies photographs could desire to have them with a view to be neutered. If he's in simple terms too youthful for a rabies shot i might call the vet and ask how youthful he will neuter a dogs. Many vets want to do it while they are truly youthful as they heal up much less complicated and speedier.

GO BACK TO THE CONE!!! You cannot muzzle a dog for more than a hour! In some states it is known as cruelty to animals and you can be fined!

Is he on pain meds?
