I don't want to seem stupid, but I want to go to Ireland next year on holiday, and don't have a passport. Do you need one, ?. thanks.

I didn't add that I live in England. From England to Ireland return, and either plane or ferry.

UK citizens do not require a passport for travel to Ireland - North or South. HOWEVER, if travelling by airplane you do require photographic identification which must be a photo driving license (the new one) or a passport. You will not be allowed to board a flight without such identification................

If you are going only from the UK to Ireland and back (no other countries involved) then you do not need a passport but you do need photo ID eg driving licence.
If you don't have a driving licence either, check with the plane or ferry operator in advance what ID is required.

What nationality are you? If you are British or Irish in theory you do not need a passport to travel between the UK & the Republic of Ireland but in practise you will be advised to get a passport. If you are not British or Irish but resident in either the UK or Republic of Ireland you will need a passport & in the case of non-EU nationals some will require a visa to enter both countries. If you are British or Irish & you want to travel within the EU you will need a passport - most EU countries are signatories of what is called the Schengen Agreement, citizens living in the signatory countries can travel between these countries using only national identity papers. The UK & the Republic of Ireland are NOT signatories of the Schengen Agreement and citizens of both countries must carry passports when travelling within the EU. If you want to travel outside the EU, you will definitely need a passport & in some cases you will need a visa as well.

1. you will not require a passport provided you are a U.K citizen, born there that is.
2.you will require a passport if you are a citizen of the commonwealth or are a U.K resident or a holder of a passport obtained by residency or asylum or some other means, you will also be required to obtain a visa with the exception of Canada, Austrailia and New Zealand for stays of less than 3 months.
A drivers licence or form of indentification establishing birth is all you require if you are in the first category.
There are immgration checks at all entry points , including the North of Ireland land border.
These were introduced 2 years ago because of the influx of Nigerians traveling to Ireland seeking asylum, Having outstayed their visa's in Britain and exhausted their asylum applications there.
Hope this helps

You do not need a passport to travel to and from Ireland, you will need some photo ID to travel, due to security situation, so driving licence would be fine.

If you're going to Ireland from the UK you don't need a passport but other than that I think you do.
