A poster name iblis wrtoe this in response to a question:
"Clearly you don't know your history to well.Christians were killing people during the Crusades and then Inquisitions!"

Really what he should say is that humans have been fighting wars since the beginning of time, but that doesn't tell us who is right and who is wrong in each case.It is possible that they killed people and were right, why cannot he accept this possible reality?
This writer only adopts and rejects things as it is convenient for him not according to some honorable rule..
The fact that wars were fought and then just taking note of them does not tell us who was right and wrong in those wars. One cannot simply state see people fought and people died here, that doesnt tell us anything, without investigating the causes of war and reasons why. That is the same as not having a fair trial, they are just condemned , no trial , no jury, no defense allowed. This guy just condemns them.

Does this reflect a blinding dislike of religion and/or specifically Catholics and Christians?

2006-12-30 08:30:29 · update #1

They were only cultural Christians, but they were secular politicla leaders as well if not primarily. These things ought to be recognised. And yes I have studied the Crusades and the Catholics were in my opinion totally right and smart to do so , excepting the evils that happened but cannot be rightly or truly labelled as the Crusade. How enormously biased is it to call every injustice the Crusade rather than the actual Crusade which was a fight for survival. If Muslims conquered Spain, and already conqeured the Byzantine empire, what on earht was europe to think?
The Muslims also took over Jerusalem from Christians, and Europe said enough is enough let us go on the offense. Evils that were comitted can only be blamed on human nature not Chrsitians or Christian teachings,in fact they could be more properly called the deeds of atheists in heart , secularists who were Christians in name only .What is that but an unbeliever?

Waht is behind it all is not religion, it is political power. As Aristotle said man is a political animal, wanting power and to mainatin it. Christianity is a religion that teaches love and peace and future judgement in righteousness. It has nothing to do with motivating this war. Wars are motivated by fear, desire for survival, for respect, for territory, I defy any and all people who say they agree with this person to show me in the teachings of Jesus , which define what a Christian is, where any of these things are promoted?
Since I know you can't but only love to have an opportunity to hate something and reveal your inbred violent hatred and unjust reasonings. What is a person who casts off the teachings of Christ but one of you, and so these people who were unbelievers living in a Christian Culture, they were in truth secular, disobedient , unbelievers like you.

Are you siding with the Christians on the crusades and the inquisition? Because if so you really do need to read a history book. Yes, of course wars have been fought since the beginning of time. The Crusades were fought to "free" Jerusalem from the Muslims, although it really didn't need freedom...the crusaders not only killed those who were fighting against them but also innocent people who were in the way...including other Christians. And the Inquisition wasn't really a war, it was simply a way to get rid of the non Christians and other political adversaries. I could go further into the details of both but this question really isn't worth it.

The problem with deciding who is right and wrong in ANY cause is who DETERMINES what's right and wrong. Who is to say that Christianity was right for this world? Who's to say it's wrong? Who can say that one system of beliefs is the one truth, when there is no more proof of one being more "real" than another? The causes for wars are multiple. Some were for power, some for religious causes. If BOTH of you would research why exactly the Crusades happened in the first place, you may both come to an agreement. The Inquisitions were, in fact, an insurgence of the Christian faith into mostly Pagan areas of the world. It was not a war, merely a period in time when people were tortured, maimed, and brutally murdered for the sake of furthering a religion that, like all other religions, was made up by a group of elitists who thought their ideas were better than anyone else's.

iblis' statement is accurate. The Inquisition was not a war, it was political suppression of opposition with terror by the Christians. It was like something from a South American dictatorship. The Crusades were a brutal series of Holy Wars fought over centuries by the Christians in an attempt to contol the trade routes of the Middle East.

What you have done by posting this without a question is worse than what you accuse this person of doing. You are condemning without giving the evidence. If the question was in place we might be able to judge if the answer was appropriate.

But, they were right, Christians, in the office of the Church, were killing and torturing people during the Crusades and the Inquisition.

In fact, several crusades were called against other Christians, for heresy.

So, Iblis is just being historically accurate about what occured, it's usually just the apologists that like to claim a genocide isn't a genocide.

Perhaps you need to do some investigation; there are numerous examples where wars were fought in the name, and purpose, of religion. The Crusades are the best example and the Inquisition was worse than a war, it was religious cleansing. I don't know what else the writer said, but I don't have any objections to that statement, it's fact.

I think he should have written "Clearly you don't know your history too well. Christians were killing people during the Crusades and then again during the Inquisition!" That clears up the grammer.

His statement alone doesn't mention anything about right or wrong being assigned to the killings, just that Christians did some killing during specific times in history.

I think it's kind of an ethics issue. Christianity emphasizes the goodness, the 'thou shall not kill' and the peace to all man kind - but, then has a history just as violent as everyone elses. It 'feels' hypocritical and loses its sense of 'absolute right' that most faiths claim.

Yes, each issue should be argued in context. But, this guy's argument should not be written off either. He may not have been as tactful about it as he could have been - but, that doesn't mean it lacks merit.

And, let's face it, religion just riles people up sometimes.

Most wars were instigated by the Church in power at the time/Crusades/Revolutions/ Communism , etc.

Remember: the objective of all wars is to make some people rich at the expense of others.

The point that the author was trying to make is that he apparently does not support religious wars and does not believe that Christians ( Catholics included. I honestly can't stand the people who separate it with Catholic/Christian. It's the same thing) should be forcing their beliefs on those who feel differently. Salvation at the tip of a sword.

this is typical of "there is something wrong in the World of today". simple because the conscience of humanity isn't what should be now a day's, according to my calculation of the human evolution. Know we Will enter in the conditions that have create the incoming end of the world, simply because the look of been tolerant, and comprehensive to the needs of others, "when that needs aren't power by material desires."
