Hoarseness is caused by vocal abuse, exposure to harsh chemicals, and illness involving the throat (such as a cold), or trauma. The vocal cords get irritated and swell. Only time, and voice rest, will make the hoarseness go away.
Voice rest includes no laughing, humming, singing, loud whispering, coughing, or anything else that irritates the vocal cords.
If you rest your voice, you should be back to normal in under 2 weeks. If it doesn't get better, a visit to an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) is needed.
