Basic Training is designed to turn civilians (some of whom consider moving from the couch to the fridge "strenuous activity") into Soldiers. Your current level of fitness will definitely suffice as a starting point. You can expect to start light and build your way up throughout the course. Right now you're scoring at 61% for push-ups, 55% for sit ups, and 46% for the run, as per the Army Physical Fitness Test. Thats a lot better than most 17-18 year olds just coming in. By the time you graduate, you'll be well over 60% per event (which is the Army standard). I say go for it before you regret not doing it.

I am not going to lie to you. You will pass Basic and Infantry school but you are only going to be able to make the bare minimum with a lot of improvement if you are running 10 minute miles!!!! I would switch to a soft-skill support job just based on your age. The military standard is 60% in each category but your unit reserves the right to up the standard from there. My friend was Infantry in the 82nd Airborne and his unit standard was 270!! Any less than 270 got you put on remedial PT and flagged.
I commend you on your desire to join the military and serve but please be realistic. My good friend who eventually got discharged was 34 when he joined and he could not hack much of the rigors of military life and had a huge amount of problems being ordered around by 19 year olds (and he was only a chaplains assitant). Military physical fitness is a way of life and once you complete basic training and AIT it only gets harder from their. You will wake up at 5:30 in the morning 5 days a week and do PT at a higher level than was expected in basic training. If you go Infantry you are going to be expected to operate like a 18 year old track star. Plus if you get out there are not a lot of jobs for civilian Infantry. I would suggest looking into support jobs where you are going to be around a lot of people who are either older or who are more on your level.
Please reevaluate your strengths and weaknesses and go from there. If you do choose Infantry, good luck, stay positive, and you'll finally understand why the sky is blue.

There are a lot of tough guys out there that think they can handle basic training. It's kind of funny, yet pathetic in a way, to see those tough guys crying when they "break." That's what basic training is all about, breaking you down and then building you back up in military style. Some call it brainwashing. Call it whatever, but the mental requirements are more difficult than physical. You'll be standing there sometime in the first few days wondering what you got yourself into.
And as far as physical fitness, I would say boot camp would be a challenge for you, but you would probably make it.

Go for it. The Army recently changed their age limit to 42. We get AFN (the channel for military and their family stationed overseas) and they were profiling two women who just joined the Army at the age of 41. It sounds like you are in somewhat good health and strong. You'll make it. Just think hard about what job you want to do in the Army, some jobs are almost impossible to get promoted in, but others have rapid promotions. Have you taken the ASVAB and talked to a recruiter yet? You could at least start there and see what the recruiter has to say. Good Luck.

sure it somewhat is an previous argument from the 60's , yet perhaps the young little ones have not heard it in the previous.in case you're legally allowed to kill human beings on the age of 18 then why could you not be allowed to drink? you would be able to as nicely connect the u . s . military at 17? ,and the British military had sixteen 3 hundred and sixty 5 days previous's serving interior the front lines interior the 1990's gulf war and while they lower back to England they had to attend 2 extra years in the previous they have been seen mature sufficient to drink a lager!, My argument is that in case you're seen mature sufficient to kill legally then you definately would desire to be legally allowed to drink a lager?

Sounds like you're in pretty good shape. I wish I had practiced carrying 60lb before basic!
Go to goarmy.com and chat with a recruiter, they can give you more details. And right now there are a lot of people home from Basic for Exodus, I'm sure they will be in the chat rooms too. You can pick their brains too.
If I can do it, you can do it!
