The first girl and Darren are both idiots - don't listen to them. I have a pit and she is awesome. It doesn't matter what breed your dog is, he is simply a puppy that needs work. Take him to obedience school. I took mine when she was under a year and I recommend it.
PS- my pit was the best dog in the class so don't let anyone tell you anything negative about your dog because he's a pit. Those people are ignorant.

I believe unless you're an experienced dog trainer, all dog owners should take their dogs to obedience classes (especially pit bull owners!). You'll have a much closer and more rewarding relationship with your dog if you do.
Contact your local humane society, aspca, or major pet store like PetSmart for obedience classes near you.
For the "come" command, try putting him on a long leash and have someone help you by holding the leash. Tell the dog to sit and stay. Back away from him, keeping an eye on him. Make sure your helper doesn't let him follow you. Then, when you're the length of the leash away from him, say "come" and sound really excited about it, and your helper should give the leash some slack, but not totally let go. If your dog comes to you, give him lots of praise and a treat.
Good luck!

Pits, by the nature of their breeding are sometimes hard to control as they can withstand physical and mental pain perhaps more than any other breed. You must become the alpha and combine it with proper training. If you dont have training knowledge you can enroll in a local obedience class . Get a book on basic obedience training available at most pet supply stores and at your local librury. You can call or EM the Ims co they will mail you a pamplet on basic obedience.Free literature is available through AKC.ORG

Sounds like you need to get him training. He doesn't see you as the leader of the pack and so he is challenging your authority. Seek outside training so you can learn how to become the leader of the pack and take back control. This would happen with ANY dog that doesn't see you as the leader. Dogs are pack animals and this behavior is typical of all dogs who do not have proper training.
Call your local pit bull rescue group or a no kill rescue and explain the problem. ASK them to recommend a trainer or program in your area. This is the best way to find one that is experienced with dogs who have to relearn someo of their behavior.
I wish you all the best!

I took my dog to obedience school. After you get him to sit. Teach him to stay. By putting your hand in front of his face and telling him to stay. Then slowly take 5 steps away from him. Tell him to come and give him a treat when he comes to you. Keep doing this and going farther away from him each time. And give him a treat each time he comes. But be sure you train him to sit and STAY first. If a car comes and you say stay. It will save his life one day. Only do this about 5 minutes a day. Dogs get bored with working. Should only take about a week. Good luck

He will never get too old to learn. And he cant run away if you leash him. Use certain words when training,,like,,here,,stay etc.If you got to play to get him to come,,then train him to that.I strongly recommend that you watch the show "The Dog Whisperer".He is truely amazing & also has a training video. And remember,,dogs & children wont listen unless they like you.Get a better relationship with your dog. And be patient but consistent.Never get mad or hit the dog.It will break their trust in you.

Pit bulls are actually very easy to train, as well as eager to please.
When teaching "come," you must reward lavishly and praise highly!!! I suggest saying the dog's name to get his attention, and then tell him "come." When he comes to you, praise like crazy and give him bits of hot dog or cooked chicken, or pieces of cheese. Make these really good rewards, to make him see that coming to you is worth it.
You can also put a leash on him, and if he does not come when called, pop the leash in your direction firmly one time, and tell him come. Clapping and talking to him enthusiastically will also encourage him to return to you.
Good luck!

Have you consider bringing him to obedient class? That would be a great start. Some dogs are harder to train than others and these classes can help. Good Luck.

Try rewarding him when he does what you tell him to, with a little snack of some kind and verbal thanks. These dogs can be very stubborn, yet very affectionate if they are properly trained.
