It doesn't matter if I put medication on them, picked at them, or just left them alone. Is there something wrong with me? How do I prevent this from happening and how do I get rid of the darker spots left by the pimples?

What you have is post-inflammatory pigmentation. It's a discoloration that's left on the skin after a skin disease (acne) has been healed. The pigmentation tends to clear with time, but you should avoid rubbing/sunlight exposure.

DONT pick at them, just leave them alone.
wash your face at least 2 times a day with a face wash that suits your skintype (oily, dry, etc)
keep hair out of your face.
PROACTIVE helps.
there are scar products that help. buy some scar serums from your local drugstore.
