I've got a mark 4 VW Golf 1998. The O/S/R door needs a new door catch mechanism. Does anyone know if it is possible to do this job yourself or do I have to get a mechanic to do it? I've been quoted £25 for the job by a local mechanic. If I can do this job myself, do I need any special tools?

Thanks.

Straightforward enough to do, but for £25 I wouldn't bother.

You can do it yourself, but it would take hours to do it.You have to remove the doorpanel to be able to get at the control rod that locks the door before you can remove the door catch. I think that the price you have been qouted is reasonable so I would let the mechanic get on with it.It is also possible you would have to buy some special tool

If you are talking the mechanism in the door you need a big philips screwdriver to match that screw. and you have to take off the door handle which means finding the hidden screws under the chrome and take off the door panel to see how things hang together.
