My sister has really thick straight hair as well. To get some nice waves in it, she will french braid it while it's wet and sleep in it overnight. When she takes it out the next day, voila! Nice soft waves. It's really pretty.

first you need to put soft waves in then curl the waves. When your hair is wet, put it in braids and leave them overnight, when you take them out they will have waves where the chunks were woven together. Next you can take a big metal roll brush, wrap your hair around it, the bigger the roll the better, and blow it dry even tho your hair is already dry, the heat and metal with the dryer on high will make your hair super shiny and big bouncy curls and it will be temporary until you wash again.
