I wonder what your thoughts are around the execution of Saddam! I think we all can agree on what kind of person he was. What's interesting me here is how people feel and think about the future impact of the execution, and why it is that a "friend" of the US can turn into a "foe??"

My thoughts are simply that execution (generally) is no answer; we're not dealing with industrial wastes here, this is a human life, however terrible. I've set the question and suggestion that it was rather more harmful to him if they simply kept him locked up for life, to let him reflect on his murderous reign and maybe...just maybe get to the point where he can come to terms with his maker.

As for the future impact, already with sectarian unrest between Sunnis and Shiits in Iraq, plus the political standoff between those two now in Lebanon, and the predominantly Sunni Arab nations watching the Shiite Iran's nuclear ambitions on the rise, Sunni Saddam's execution on the first day of the "Adha" festivities sure would kindle further resentment on the Sunni side, especially that Shiits (in Iraq mainly) are celebrating and lauding the man's execution.

Just like Bin Laden and the Afghan rebels were "Mujahideen" (= freedom fighters) when they faught Soviet occupation, and all the sudden turned into "Terrorists" when they opposed American politics and combatted its military might, all the same with Saddam's regime. It has been reported somewhere (and I'm not so positive about this) that the American envoy April Glasby told Saddam he wouldn't be touched should he invade Kuwait and gave him the clear impression he would rather be supported by the US administration; but what happened on the eve of the invasion? The US mustered an international coalition to sack the invader out and embarked on a widescale "Desert Storm" military operation which since then left the Iraqi nation in shambles, and I wonder why they didn't finish Saddam's Baathist regime right then.

Well...it's presumably finished, and the regime has but a handfull of armed combatants to cleanse off the streets and alleys of the shattered country; an objective which I'm sure, the US and its associates will not withdraw before achieving.

Future Impact - none of any consequence; the cheeseball has been yesterday's news for quite some time now.

Friend / Foe - Sadly Insane was never a friend; he was temporarily useful in helping the Persians to understand that taking 54 hostages was a bit of a mistake - end of story.

Same deal with the former Shah of Iran...we put him in power didn't we? Look what happend to him. Iranians everywhere suffered under him...few families were spared the terror of the Shah. The bottom line is that most dictators end in death or exile.
Future? It might get worse before it gets better, but the psychology has changed now and that's a good thing.

i like the 1st and third solutions the terrific. wager i'm in basic terms gonna say extra of the same. i think of i'd have thrown him handcuffed right into a crowd of folk who had lost family members contributors because of the fact of his insanity. the two that, or torture him critically on public television and then observed his head off with a blunt knife. that should have been cool, too.

Hussein was tried and found guilty by an Iraqi court of crimes against humanity. The fact that America may have been tolerant of him, at one time, should have no bearing on his trial. American courts should take note how swiftly mandated punishment was meted out.

time had no bearing on his crime. American courts should take note of how swiftly mandated punishment was executed.
