We are at war with insurgents in Iraq because the Bush administration said that they had reliable intelligence establishing that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Which would either directly, or indirectly affect the United State's security. The war was further promoted by intelligence saying that people in Iraq would welcome the American invasion because they wanted Hussein out of power. Bush was wrong on both counts. While most people in Iraq did not want Hussein in power, they did not for the most part want Americans to invade the country. When the invasion took place a "power vacuum" was created with various groups trying to take control of the country. This situation remains today. The weapons of mass destruction were never found ( even though it is known that Hussein used them in the past ). The United States continues to try to put a democratic government in place in Iraq. However, frequent attacks on that government, and those that support it continue.

The best answer that I can give you is simply this. The fight for freedom and the fight against terrorism has been going on long before we were born. The revolutionary war was a war to gain what? Freedom. If you lived under a king or queen in that era you could have faced the gallows for saying something against the monarchy. Our Civil war was a war against our selves....due to taxes and slavery. As history takes us in time, Wars are fought for reasons to benefit a people and their beliefs or to right a wrong. There will always be those who oppose war. I would hang my boots up and gladly quit the military if i knew that peace would reign forever. But there will always be another Adolf Hitler, Saddam there will be another to take his place and cause terror on a people. Wars are necessary at times to keep peace alive. If you do not fight for freedom, democracy and the like, peace will die.
Since Saddam is dead, it would be a good assumption that the war there should be over, for the most part it is. During WW2 there was German and Japanese insurgenceswere going on, they at that time were called "The Resistance"....Its just in a different wrapper in todays age. Like all the wars past, the healing must begin, and this takes time to mend.

Alright you want to know the whole truth and nothing but it, read this.
----
Saddam got shipments of petrolium. Weapon Inspectors from the UN and US (Probably some other countries too) tried to go in to see what he was doing w/ the petrolium, right? Well, Saddam wouldnt let any of the Inspectors into his country, and the UN (over time) put 17 sanctions on Iraq and Saddam ignored them all. So you have a crazy dictator hungry for power that just got a shipment of petrolium and now hes not letting anyone see what hes doing w/ it; its common sense he was up to something. (Petrolium can be used to make WMD just incase you didnt know)
And on top of that, Saddam commited genoside of the Kurds. He murdered at least 100,000 Kurds w/ mustard gas and sarin (WMD); so whether or not they did find the Nuclear WMD, they found mustard gas and sarin.
So w/ a power hungry murdering dictator in Middle East, whos killed over 100,000 people and started 2 major wars in the past 2 decades that is thought to have WMD; didnt settle well w/ the UN and Congress. The UN wouldnt act, as usual, so Congress did and declared War.

What the heck are people talking about !!! Saddam never flew any planes into the world trade center!! There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq! Saddam is over and done with. The U.S. is still in Iraq because Bush can't think of a way out! I believe the questioner knows exactly what went on. I think she or he has just run out of questions.

Well most people think its because they hit the the world trade centre and U.S.A retaliated and since Canada are allied with America, the president thought it was also our duty to let our troops go over there to fight. But Canada is a peace keeping country and that caused problems because America wanted us to fight. But actually the war started because Iraq and some other middle east countries implied that they had weapons of mass destruction and that they would use them. In truth they didn't but the U.S thought that they did and attacked.

Read the Iraq Study Group plan. A bunch of oil mongerers want Iraq oil. And that's all it's about. Don't let them fool you. Troops are used as security guards and the people who feed and clothe them (Cheney's contractor friends) make ALL the money.
Why can't America find another way to heat homes and run cars...this is going to lead to years of catastrophies.

it's a good question. bush said he wanted regime change but his man in iraq, Bremner, took this so seriously that he sacked everyone who'd been in the Ba'ath party and disbanded the army.
as a result, there was massive hostility to the americans and the original good feeling turned to hatred amongst bored young men with guns. Deep de-Baathification and the breaking up of the army were the two big mistakes that mean the US is still at war with the resistance to their occupation.

Let's talk for a moment about jihad. This is the gathering of Muslim fanatics who's plan in to kill all infidels. You and I are considered infidels because we don't believe in that devil worship these ignorant souls are selling one another. Oh, we can pull our troops out of the middle east, but I can guarantee you, it won't be long before these freaks try another 9/11 on our own turf.
The democrats are convinced that we can negotiate with these nomads, they believe that diplomacy and understanding will do the job, and that we should lay down our sword, promote love and understanding amongst Arab brothers. I say they are out of their freakin minds. It's not going to work their way, it may not even work our way, but when it's time to turn out the lights, there will be a lot fewer of them left in the dark, doing it our way.
