I know people on here who are disguising who they are... not very effectively in some cases, and acting like somebody they are not. For instance, they disguise their age, they put up some sort of bravado which is uncharacteristic of their real selves, and some are just plain abusive and stupid. Why is that... is it an outlet, or what?

This is much closer than all of you think, but some of your answers are great... thank you for those. To the person who thinks my question is stupid... I've downrated you. I think you're very immature. I come in here to try and help out those with a truly genuine question, and I can't be doing badly because my best answers rate is at 9%. But, I see some really provocative questions on here, and I've seen some of them answered by people I know, in a very provocative way, which hurts me very much. That's my reason for asking the question... I wanted to know what people's feelings were about these actions. I only hope that those of you who say it's a game, are right.
I'd like to put several of you up for best answer but that's impossible, so forgive me if you've given a really informative answer and haven't been chosen. Thank you everybody.

Who are these people I wonder? I'm not sure about all this, but I've wondered the same thing myself. Some people have to disguise themselves to hide from people they don't want to talk to, some people enjoy lying, mental problems, various reasons. It could be an outlet, something for bored loosers to do. For instance, heres an example, I was on this site awhile back and about 75% of the people sit and pick at you and start trouble constantly. 1. They are very immature and they feel good when they hurt someone else. 2. They know it makes you mad and you are playing into the game. 3. Maybe you don't know the people your talking about as well as you do, after 10 yrs being around the same person, I found I didn't know them like I thought I did. You'd be surprised.

You are absolutely right and different people do it for different reasons. Some put up gorgeous pics of someone they would love to look like, because they are not happy about their own appearance; some wish they were much younger, so they pretend to be in order to flirt with the younger of the opposite sex, or even same sex sometimes ; others are sexual predators, as someone mentioned above; some are police officers looking for those predators; everyone has their reasons, but there are others who display their real selves (my profile is 100% real). Unfortunately, with the age of the internet, people can hide their true selves not only here, but in chat rooms or game rooms as well. I guess there is nothing wrong with that, as long as your actions are innocent.

Bravo. Great question.
The Internet is a way for small people to do big things. It's an ego boost when you check your email and see your answer has been chosen as the best. It gets to people who can finally be important in a world where they aren't. I'd put my face up on here but don't know how.

Anonymity is both a blessing and a curse. There are no real consequences to any actions that you take online. It is very easy to just act as outrageous and uncharacteristic as you want to be, to serve as some sort of release, to get attention, or to live out some kind of fantasy or need.

You've posted this in the wrong category, but what you say happens all over the 'net. People use it to be someone else...they will often post things they'd never say to another person's face but online they feel safe (when really they are just cowards).
Just part of having to dig through what you find online to get to the quality people and quality info..it's out there...just sometimes buried underneath a lot of trash...

Maybe some people on line don't want their personal lives spread all over the Internet.

I'm also straight. 50 to be exact and just like a past time. If
I can make a difference so be it, if not I'm sorry but I don't pretend
to be what I'm not. That goes to all you jerks out there.
Try not to let it bother you, and I'm sorry you feel that way.

I notice that on myspace A LOT. I don't know i guess people just want other people to think that they're cooler than they really are. Or they're compulsive liars.

People do that on answers? I've heard of people doing it on other things but why on here? You just help people that need help.

Anonymity lends courage to many of us...
Sometimes it gets out of hand when inexperienced
juveniles are free to say whatever comes to mind.
