I do some basic research before deciding.
I ask around with my friends (Most of them are into electronics of different types), and also read reviews online and may occasionally ask in forums what the basic opinions are on a item.

i usually do the most expensive because they usually are the best, worth the price because it is electronics and not salt or anything like that.

You are absolutely right! Every manufacturer has it's lemons. The best thing is to see how products are rated by other people who have used them.
