It was different for me, way back in the 1990's. Female recruits trained separately and their block was strictly off-limits to us male recruits.

Of course, after you earn your rank and get posted out, you'd probably meet a few women in green during your time of duty.

Are things different now (the unisex training, that is)?

(Note: I live in Southeast Asia).

No, I'm not asking them to train together! I'm just keeping myself up-to-date, to see how things are now.

I went to basic in Ft Leonard Wood, MO, there were 150 people in my company, and I believe it was pretty close to half and half women/men.

Our barracks was 1 building with 3 floors. 1st floor male only. 3 floor female only. 2nd floor was split in half with locked door that would alarm loudly through out the entire building if it was opened. On one side of the door there were males, on the other were females.

We couldn't be alone with an opposite member of sex. Never could be be a male/female talking or whatnot. You had to always have a "battle buddy" with you of the same sex no matter what you did or where you went. That way it protected you and other people of harassment.

We trained side by side with the males, just couldn't talk that much to them unless it was about training.

No. females go thru basic seperate from the males then they train together after that. Its for disiplinary reasons so no one abuses the male and female thing. We all slept in the same tents and hangars in Iraq but had our own seperate areas and the males were for the most part respectful and protective of us girls. Like a big family. When I was at camp victory an airforce Colonel relized there was a female in the tent(after three days cause our hrs were different) so I had to go sleep outside in my vehicle, but my driver and the Navy Chief in charge of my security mission slept outside the truck to make sure nothing happened to me.Sweet. I was the gunner.

Here in the US, the Army trains men and women together at two different basic training areas. One is In South Carolina. There are are also at least two basic training areas that are for men only. The Army does not have a seperate Basic Training for women. For Advanced individual training (AIT) the men and women are together.

I went through basic training in 2003. With Basic men and women were trained together. Of course we slept in different areas and we were not allowed to interact on a one on one basis (we always had to have a "buddy" of the same sex with us), but all of our training was together. I also went through special operations AIT in fort bragg where we were trained together.
