no one really knows for sure, but...
Leonardo Da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa on a piece of pine wood in the year 1506.
Never in the history of Art has one painting been so admired. This is due largely to the enigmatic smile, which has caused much speculation. He recorded in his notebooks the records of model sittings; but nowhere can be found any records of the Mona Lisa model sitting. Why is that? Who posed for him? Dr. Lillian Schwartz of Bell Labs suggests that Leonardo painted himself, and was able to support her theory by analyzing the facial features of Leonardo's face and that of the famous painting, She digitized both the self-portrait of the artist and the Mona Lisa. She flipped the self portrait and merged the two images together using a computer. She noticed the features of the face aligned perfectly! You may draw your own conclusion

It's a psychological phenomenon that this painting continues to mystify everybody all over the world, as it has ever since DaVinci painted it in 1506. And let's face it- the only reason it continues to do so is because it is shown so frequently. The never- ending fascination of the painting has its root of success in the #1 business strategy- just look around in France..everywhere you look the Mona Lisa is practically following you. it's all over the media constantly, TV shows, books, movies, video broadcasts, interviews of experts, etc etc etc.. if there was such a hype about any other painting in the world, we would be wondering about Roberti's fat ankle now instead of Mona Lisa's smile.

That's the most uneducated guess I've ever heard, surrounding the mystery of this painting. It is generally believed that one of two things are the reason behind her coy little smile. That A: She has no teeth!, or B: that this is actually a self portrait of the artist Leonardo Da Vinci as a woman. So the little smirk would suggest that he's fooled the audience by disguising himself as this woman "Mona Lisa".

she prbably was pregnant because of the x-rays showing a lace collar which pregnant woman wore in those day the info that De Vinvi was gay doesn't wash, he was quite the ladies man as a matter of fact ...... the smile is always mentined but who can say why someone smiles..... would you want to spend all that time painting a person who was frowning.... not fun at all from a live model ... why do you think she was smiling?.... maybe she was just thinking about something pleasant as she might have been asked to do by the aritst so that her face was just right to paint.

Most have guessed she is pregnant.
My idea is she got out of making the pasta if she posed for the painting.
Leonardo da Vinci was gay so she is not pregnant with his child.

I read somewhere that she was actually a prostitute and they had just made passionate love. So she looks a bit weary and just barely smiling.
I don't really see the big mystery in it to be honest.
