The other day, a friend stopped by to visit. He accidentally left his cell phone on the couch when he got up to use the washroom. I picked up the phone thinking it was mine, and when I tried to make a phone call, I received a message that the phone was no longer in service.

When I looked closer, I realized the phone was the same model as mine, but not my phone. So I put it back on the couch. About 30 minutes later, we were all sitting around playing cards and talking as normal, and this friend stood up and said "excuse me, my phone is vibrating".

Of course no one thought anything about it, but I knew the phone was not working. He stood in the background laughing and talking for almost 30 minutes, where he knew others could hear him. He then returned and said "sorry guys, that was a good friend of mine". Then he went on and on about their conversation.

When he left I called to say thanks for stopping by, and to see if it was still disconnected, and of course it was still off.

Why would he do this? Should I mention it to him or our other friends, or let it go. Is that a sign something is wrong with him, or do you think it was just for attention? Everything was fine at the house, we were all getting along well with no problems as usual, so it doesn't make sense to me.

I also thought it was probably to appear important, but 30 minutes is a long time to fake a conversation. He was laughing, pausing, and the whole nine yards. One of our other friends even said he could invite his friend if he wanted to. That's how long he was on the phone.

Don't metion it to the others. My guess, he was trying to impress you all, and make himself look more important and or poplular. Not that long ago, they did a survey on that very thing and discovered that many times when you see that someone is on the phone talking and laughing, no one is on the other line. They admitted that they do it, because they feel less uncomfortable in public.

Maybe he has more than one phone? Or as others have said he wants to appear more popular and important than he really is, all I know for sure is if this question gave me a good laugh then it will probably cause quite a few chuckles all around. Maybe confront him on it and ask for an explantion.

I think you should beware of this friend's motives. Anyone who would take the time to fake an elaborate conversation for a half hour is hiding something from you. He is, at the very least, not being honest about himself. You need to keep your eye on him and be aware of any other inconsistancies in his behavior. I would also tell your other friends about any future incidents that you observe if you feel they need to know.

Talk to your friend about it. Perhaps the phone really was working, you just didn't notice or the phone went back in service. Or maybe this is a cry for attention from your friend. Ask him if anything's wrong.
Good luck! ;]

Perhaps he wants to seem more popular and more important than he thinks he is. No one can give you a more informed answer than your friend with the phone can, though.

There's a mental condition like that. Where people act like they have all these friends and they're so popular, so they can impress people or feel better about themselves. If you believed him, he would know that you thought he had loads of friends.

I think he was just showing off or trying to act cool or better than you. Maybe he is feeling down or bad. If anything I would confront him about it.

Maybe he was feeling uncomfortable about what you were talking about. Or maybe he had no idea what you were talking about and wanted to get away from there.
