I'm looking for the name of the painting with a woman sitting in a chair on the right side looking to the left. Her clothes are of the 1800's. I don't know what she's doing, knitting or reading a book. I want to say the wall is greenish and there may be a picture hanging on the wall. I want to say there is a staircase but I'm not sure. Thanks!

I believe the painting you're referring to is called "Whistler's Mother" by J. Abbot McNeil Whistler. It fits your "famou painting" criteria. Woman sitting in chair looking to the right, green wall, and painting. So there you go. Your famous painting issue has been solved!

Whistlers Mother By James Mcneal Whistler . Made so famous in the Mr Bean film.
He used an enormous table and mixed each colour he would use for the day . He painted Thomas Carlyle who seeing a little girl leave as he was arriving to sit to Whistler asked the maid who she was to which the maid replied she was having her portrait done . Carlyle said ' Poor wee lassie' . Whistler was the most exacting painter and bullied his sitters if they did not sit still and if he did not get it right would wipe everyhting off the canvas and start again the next time which meant the sitters had to come back many many times
