wood prices and plans

Wood prices are coming down. They're lower than they have been in a long time. Whole logs are another story. Their prices have not varied much over the past years.

Kit homes are very nice, but not so much economical. Contact a local saw mill for whole log prices, this will most likely be cheaper than a local building supply. Keep in mind that fresh cut logs must dry for a minimum of one year. Even then, steps must be taken to allow for shrinkage in the future.

It can be done inexpensively if you find the right place to get logs and do the peeling yourself, etc. Good luck

Wood is incredibly expensive right now. And while the log home kits may seem like a cheaper alternative, I have heard some bad things about some of the kit manufacturer, (Do a yahoo search under 'Horror stories about kit log homes.') so I would thoroughly research any company I was considering buying a kit from. Your best bet might be to go directly to the source for wood. Not sure where you are from, but there are a lot of tree farmers out there as well as a lot of people clearing land on the side, etc. (Especially in wooded areas of the country. Vermont come to mind!) Contact them directly so you can pick out your own logs and save a bundle of $$ in the process. For plans, there is a website called www.loghomplansonline.com. You can get plenty of ideas and plans there. Hope this helps!!

If you could find a piece of property that someone invested in and then ran out of money then you could get a piece of property with the well and septic already put in and that would save you about 20000. The log home kits are generally less expensive but do your research. Some of the kits don't come with everything that you need. There are some kits that come with doors and windows and some that don't. Just be thorough in your research. Good Luck

First find the cheapest piece of land you can find that is buildable. That will save the bulk of your homebuilding cost. There is a kit you can get that according to Mother Earth News is a very cheap way to go. I have provided the link.
