It seems to me that Americans hate free time on a sub-conscience level! It seems that Americans make life decisions one after the other that take away their free time. Whether it be more procreation (more long hours at work), bigger house (more long hours at work), buying crap you don't need (more long hours at work), etc etc etc. What ever happen to just taking enough responsibility to sustain your life in a non-agrarian society and not an ounce more AND JUST LIVE!!!!!!

I know exactly what you are saying. I have been in Germany and other countries several times. Everything is so much slower paced. You can stop actually stop and appreciate things. When I went to Cayman they called it island time. Believe me there is such a time. A day feels like a day not 4 hours. A week felt like a week and not four days. I think a lot some of it has to do with the cost of living and in many families both parents have to work. Then you have to rush to get the kids, rush to get dinner on the table, by the time homework is done it is time for bed. Where as if one parent was able to stay home it is a little easier get things done sooner. This allows for more free time (hopefully). I think some of it is has to do with increased technology so to that many companies are expecting more and people are having to work later and later. More and more stores and companies are going or have gone 24hrs. These require man power which takes a way from slowing down and family time. In a nut shell it is the way society is becoming.

Why? Why limit myself to staring at a wall for hours? Why do you care? I enjoy my free time as much as you do, even if I choose things to occupy it instead of staring into nothing. Children and a house don't mean longer work hours. My husband worked as long with 1 child as he does with 3. Just because my choices differ from yours doesn't mean they suck. I live. I live very well. But if I want to add another child or another activity to my life, its my business. I try hard to balance my life in a way that leaves it pretty stress-free. Try it some time.

To some extent I agree. I work hard, but in the evening I want to be free to do whatever, which honestly just consists of playing on the internet, lol. But why anyone wants their entire day taken up I don't know, and I doubt it's healthy either.

I cherish every moment of my free time. So this doesn't apply to all Americans.
