About 20-30 000 years. After the last ice age with the improving climate man formed settled communities of hunter-gatherers and then farming communities although it should be noted that even in the 20th century some peoples, like the Australian Aborigines were still classed as living with stone age technology.

Neanderthals, the classic cavemen, became extinct about 24,000 years ago. Cro-Magnon, the other classic cavemen, did not become extinct but rather developed into modern humans. Other cavemen became extinct before the Neanderthals, e.g Homo Erectus disappeared around 1 million years ago.

What do you mean by caveman? As seen in the movies? As being a "transition" species toward moden humans? Or do you mean the cro magnum cave dwellers that existed in pre-modern Europe? Cro magnum are modern humans, homo sapiens without the collection of knowledge (technology) of our species today. Cro magnum sites date back more than 40 thousand years.....Basically, civilization began as man learned to domesticate animals, grow crops and share knowledge.

There's no such sub-species or precursor to modern man known as "cave man". Many early hominids resided in caves from time to time. A few still do, in remote areas of the world.

They haven't completely died off. Just look at George Bush.
But, to actually answer your question as best I can, the evolutionary process took thousands of years.
