I'm getting my dog neutered next month. The clinic quoted me 200 dollars for the neutering, pain management, shots, and blood work when he gets neutered. This seems like a very fair price to me, but I was wondering what the blood work is for. Does anyone know?

The Blood work is to check the basic healthiness of the dog. Do you want an anemic dog going under the knife???

At 2 years old they would do what is called a mini panel it consists of 6 chemistry panels it tests the liver and the kidney fuctions. 2 very important organs that are needed to flush out the anesthetic from their system. They will also do what is called a PCV (packed cell vloume) they take some blood and spin it at very hide speeds the red blood cells then get pushed down to the bottom of the tube they read the amount of red blood cells and it helps to determine whether or not they are anemic. It is highly reccomended to do the bloodwork. Some dogs can seem normal on the outside but can be running severe problems on the insde and you can only determine it by the bloodwork. Most young dogs dont encounter any problems but you would rather be safe then sorry. And it is highly rec. to test blood yearly once the dog hits 8 years old. Hope this helps.

The bloodwork determines that the organs are functioning properly. That is important so they can handle the anestesia ok. So, it's for the dog's safety with going under during the surgery.

Good luck!
